-
Why is the board adopting calendars for the 2022-23, 23-24, and 24-25 school years, instead of one year at a time?
Three years allows the district to gather data to determine if the modified calendar works better for our students, and a three-year adoption gives families the opportunity to schedule events in advance.
-
Why wasn’t the community notified about the discussion from the perpetual calendar to the modified calendar until now?
There was a specific step-by-step process to work with both the teacher association and the classified union, before the district could bring this to the community. We have worked through that process and will continue to keep the community informed of any changes going forward.
-
Does the modified calendar impact middle and high school sports schedules?
Middle and High School sports schedules do remain the same. Students may be on break during a sports season, much like traditional Winter and Spring break schedules on a traditional calendar.
-
What is the modified calendar and how is it different from the perpetual calendar the ditrict had fo
The modified calendar includes a shortened summer break (8 weeks instead of 11 weeks) then spreads out those three weeks throughout the school year. Those breaks provide intersession opportunities for students.
-
Is a modified Calendar the same as a Balanced, Year-Roud School or Extended Calendar?
The difference between a balanced calendar and modified calendar is a balanced calendar typically divides the school year into four nine-week sessions (45 days), separated by four two - week vacations (10 days) throughout the year. A modified calendar includes a shortened summer (8 weeks instead of 11 weeks) but spreads out various week long breaks throughout the year. Breaks in both calendar provide intersession opportunities. The term Year-Round calendar is associated with the Balanced Calendar due to it's equal/balanced breaks throughout the year. The Modified Calendar will yield similar benefits to the Balanced Calendar.
-
Why go to a balanced calendar?
A balanced calendar reduces the amount of summer from 11 consecutive weeks to 8 consecutive weeks. This reduction of time away from school will reduce the summer learning loss for students, means that students are more prepared for learning when they return to school in the fall.
These three weeks are then spread out throughout the school year and will allow for three intersession opportunities to support student learning, both extended learning and students who need academic interventions.
-
What are intersessions?
An intersession is an additional optional opportunity for students and teachers to continue learning on non-scheduled school days. Intersessions consist of extra-curricular activities along with academic support throughout the school year. Intersessions can run as long as a full week or a couple days of during the scheduled break. Intersessions can include activities such as; field trips, hands-on experiments, homework help, CTE activities, clubs, and more. Intersessions also provide all students who attend with meals at school. Additionally, the three weeks spread out throughout the school year will allow for three intersessions to support student learning both extended learning and interventions.

A modified calendar sounds like more school with more staffing. How is this being funded?
Intersession opportunities are partially funded through our 21st Century After School program grant, and partially with our general fund allocated from the state.
